The National Health Workforce Demand Data Repository

The National Health Workforce Demands Data Repository combines the workforce needs of more than 4,000 healthcare facilities and systems, within DC, MD, NC, and VA, into a single database. Data reflects workforce demands as of May 31, 2023 for DC, MD, and VA, and June 30, 2023 for NC. All data was gathered from healthcare facility and system websites.

Finding #1:

4,010 facilities were Evaluated

Health workforce demand data was obtained for 2,443 facilities. Data was not accessible for 39% of facilities during the evaluation period as many organizations did not have a web presence.

Finding #2:

58,566 jobs were available

At 47% of demand, hospitals accounted for the majority of available jobs! Nurses were the biggest need for hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, dialysis facilities, home health care agency, hospice care facility, and nursing homes. Adult day care centers and assisted living facilities encountered shortages of sanitation professionals, cooks, and housekeeping aids.

Finding #3:

50% of all available jobs required no degree

Jobs requiring an associate degree, certificate, or high-school diploma are in significant demand across all facility types! The majority of available jobs for federally qualified health centers and adult day care centers only required a high-school diploma. While the majority of available jobs for hospitals and rural health clinics required a bachelor’s degree.

Finding #4:

Nurses are in the most significant demand

Although nurses are in the greatest demand, direct care workers, therapists, and medical technicians are in demand as well. Roles identified as “other” (i.e., drivers, sanitation professionals, academic staff, etc.) are in significant demand across most facility types.

Finding #5:

Bachelor’s Degrees still matter most for nurses

The most demanded education types for Nurses were BS/BA and AS/AA degrees. The most demanded education type for “Technologists and Technicians” and “Direct Care Workers”, was Certification(s).
